UPR Policy on Conflict of Interest …(Cert. 63-2007-08)

The Board of Trustees of the University of Puerto Rico approved last May 2008 the UPR POLICY ON CONFLICTS OF INTERESTS AND DISCLOSURE OF FINANCIAL INTERESTS IN RESEARCH AND OTHER SPONSORED PROGRAMS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO.

Professional Service Contracts Processed at UPRM R&DC

The R&D Center processes all professional service contracts associated to research activities. In order to facilitate the processing of those contracts, particularly those which require further filing at the Comptroller’s Office of Puerto Rico, it is recommended to bring an electronic copy of the contract in Word format to our office. New UPR Indirect Costs Rate Agreement Approved - 2008-2011

Finally, UPRM has been officially informed of the completion of the Indirect Costs negotiations with the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS), UPR’s Cognizant Agency. New Indirect Costs rate were negotiated after a throrough evaluation of UPRs facilities used for research which involved an specialized company, Maximus, Inc, who helped UPR prepare a successful multiyear proposal to DHHS. As a result, new Indirect Costs Rate were approved for UPR, to be effective immediately until June 30, 2011.

The indirect costs which apply to UPRM are:

In-Campus: 50%

Off-campus: 26%

This Indirect costs rate applies to the Modified Total Direct Cost of Proposals, consisting of all salaries and wages, fringe benefits, materials, supplies, services, travel and subgrants and subcontracts up to the first $25,000 of each subgrant or subcontract (regardless of the period covered by the subgrant or subcontract). Modified total directs costs shall exclude equipment, capital expenditures, charges for patient care, tuition remission, rental costs of off-site facilities, scholarships, and fellowships as well as the portion of each subgrant and subcontract in excess of $25,000.

Internal Competition for DOD Program for HBCU/MIs Ended!!!

The Internal Competition Process for the DOD Program for HBCU/MI’s ended last Thursday, August 28, 2008.  Eleven (11) letters of intent were received.  UPRM is allowed to submit only two proposals.   The researchers whose projects were selected to compete on behalf of UPRM are:

Dr. Samuel Hernandez, Chemistry: “Laser Enhanced detection of weapons of mass destruction”

Dr. David Suleiman, Chemical Engineering: “Supercritical CO2-assisted Fluoroelastomeric Nanostructured Membranes for Fuel Cells and Sensor Applications”

Proposal due date: September 18, 2008 via Grants.gov.

Funding Opportunities for the Humanities & Social Sciences 2008-09

The American Council of Learned Societies was founded in 1919 to advance humanistic studies in all fields of learning in the humanities and related social sciences and to maintain and strengthen relations among the national societies devoted to such studies. Organized as a private, nonprofit federation of 70 national scholarly organizations, ACLS is the pre-eminent representative of humanities scholarship in the United States.
