Call for Internal Competition - NSF’s Science and Technology Centers (STC)

UPRM Researchers interested in submitting a proposal to the NSF-Science and Technology Centers: Integrative Partnerships Program (Solicitation: 05-850, must submit a Letter of Intent by Monday, August 18, 2008 at NOON at ORE Office.  For guidelines on the internal competition, click onstc-internal_competition_guidelines_2008.

Tax incentive for RO1 type Researchers (2008): “Ley de Incentivo Contributivo a Investigadores Científicos”.

This law pretends to retain in Puerto Rico and attract to Puerto Rico highly competitive researchers to advance the scientific and economic development of the island.  Researchers or scientists who receive a competitive research grant of the type RO1 or similar, may have their salary and compensation exempt from taxes.    It reads, in part:  ley-101-2008

Para añadir el inciso 58 a la Sección 1022(b) del “Código de Rentas Internas de 1994”, Ley Núm. 120 de 31 de octubre de 1994, según enmendada, para eximir de tributación los salarios devengados y compensación recibida por investigadores y científicos elegibles que realicen investigaciones y estudios en Puerto Rico en una institución de educación superior bajo los parámetros de una propuesta de investigación científica a los Institutos Nacionales de la Salud (NIH) u otra organización del gobierno federal análoga o del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico.”

New Research Web Portal at www.research.gov

R&D News - January 2008

  1. BioSEI Competition process completed: UPRM is investing @ $330,000 in four 1 1/2 yr long multidisciplinary projects in the thematic areas of: biotechnology, bioinformatics and bioengineering. 
  2. The first issue of “Sin Límites”, a new UPRM magazine, was published (Dec 2007).  It will be used to export UPRM scientific research news to the Puerto Rico community. 

BioSEI -BioScience and Engineering Initiative

The R&D Center, along with the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Agriculture announced last September 2007 the establishment of a BioScience and Engineering Initiative.  This new Seed Money Program will provide the funding and academic means to prepare our faculty, researchers and students for the development of highly competitive research projects in the areas of biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, bioinformatics and bioengineering.  Sixteen proposals were received and are currently pending external review.
