The American Council of Learned Societies was founded in 1919 to advance humanistic studies in all fields of learning in the humanities and related social sciences and to maintain and strengthen relations among the national societies devoted to such studies. Organized as a private, nonprofit federation of 70 national scholarly organizations, ACLS is the pre-eminent representative of humanities scholarship in the United States. Awarding peer-reviewed fellowships to individuals is at the core of ACLS activity. The Internal Competition Process for the NSF-Science and Technology Centers ended last Monday, August 18, 2008. Three Letters of Intent for STC’s as Leader and one for an STC as Collaborator were officially received. Since the limits of three proposals as leader and two as collaborator were not exceeded, the projects for which LOI’s were received will be the ones competing on behalf of UPRM.
The projects as leaders are:

The Research Administration Academy Seminar CID 203 - Use of American Express Corporate Card, will be offered next Thrusday, August 21, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the R&D Center’s Conference Room 123. This workshop will also be offered October 23 & December 4, 2008.
Attendance to a CID 203 workshop is now compulsory for all researchers requesting new AMEX corporate cards.

The Research and Development Center and the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agricultural Sciences and Engineering of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) announce the continuation of its Bio Science and Engineering Initiative (BioSEI) for 2009-2010 aimed to develop a coherent and interdisciplinary research program in Bio Science and Engineering at UPRM.
Letter of Intent Due Date: Friday, September 19, 2008 at noon.
Full Proposal Deadline: Thursday, October 23, 2008 at noon.

UPRM R&D Center announces its Research Administration Academy for the First Semester of the Academic Year 2008-2009. These are a series of workshops and seminars for researchers and research administrators on topics pertaining to pre-award issues such as preparation of proposals, budgets and electronic submission; and post-award topics concerning budget and human resources, purchasing, receiving, corporate card use and accounting issues. The National Endownment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipends Program provides $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Recipients must work full-time on their projects for these two months, and may hold other research grants supporting the same project during this time. NEH will be accepting only online applications via grants.gov between August 1 and October 1, 2008.

“Grants.gov is a Federal wide system developed to allow organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. Grants.gov is the single access point for over 1000 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies.”
MICROSOFT VISTA AND OFFICE 2007 COMPATIBILITY: Grants.gov is currently incompatible with both the Microsoft (MS) Vista Operating System and the Microsoft (MS) Office 2007 versions of Word, Excel and Power Point. If you attach a file created using MS Office 2007, you will not get an error message when you submit the application, however your entire application will not be able to be processed or accepted at Grants.gov and will not reach the agency.
VERY IMPORTANT - Grants.gov is currently transitioning to phase out of PureEdge software to using Adobe Reader 8 1.2 software exclusively for application completion and submission. Meanwhile, you must download the PureEdge Viewer and Adobe 8.1.2 to open application forms and instructions.
