El 2012 ha empezado con un optimismo precavido para la industria de cine de Puerto Rico.

Esta semana comienzan a rodar tres películas: las dos locales “Riding 79” de Karola Hawk y “Broche de Oro” de Raúl Marchard; y una extranjera, “Welcome to the Jungle”, producida por la compañía local Pimienta Films. Además, a principios de marzo entra en producción un proyecto de Disney, cuyo título temporero es “Big Move”, el cuarto que la compañía trae a la Isla.

“De aquí a abril, todos vamos a estar trabajando”, dijo Carlos Aníbal Vázquez, el “unit production manager” de la película de Disney, en entrevista telefónica.

“Tenemos cuatro proyectos corriendo a la misma vez, lo que es buenísimo”, coincide Frances Lausell, productora de “Broche de oro”. “Es un reto para la industria tener el equipo y mostrar que podemos tener industria en Puerto Rico. Pero tiene que haber continuidad. No sabemos que hay después de abril”.

Aunque en el “pipeline” para el verano y el otoño suenan varios proyectos, incluyendo posiblemente dos series, es crítico ver si esos proyectos se logran cuajar. El año pasado hubo trabajo más o menos hasta abril, seguido por una la larga sequía de proyectos de cine y televisión (la producción de comerciales aparte), lo que causó que muchos técnicos tuvieran que irse de la Isla a buscar trabajo.

“Aprendimos mucho del año pasado”, aclara Luillo Ruiz de Pimienta Films, uno de los productores de “Welcome to the Jungle”, cuya estrella es Jean-Claude Van Damme. “Fue catastrófico. No aguantamos otro 2011”.

Lo que sí se logró en el 2011 fueron cambios dentro de la industria que ahora se espera logren traer más proyectos, tanto locales como extranjeros, con mayor consistencia.

Productores locales han comentado que la comunicación con la Corporación de Cine ha mejorado y la empresa privada cada vez depende menos del gobierno. “Por ahí vienen cosas”, añade Ruiz, “y es por el esfuerzo de la empresa privada cinematográfica al envolverse en la promoción de Puerto Rico como destino fílmico y en el cierre de financiamiento para proyectos”.

Para Mariella Pérez, directora ejecutiva de la Corporación de Cine, mucho está en manos de los mismos productores. “Hay que ver que los proyectos de las compañías productoras sigan viento en popa”, comentó.

La Corporación, por su parte, sigue sus esfuerzos para promocionar la Isla y sus incentivos para atraer proyectos. Para los cineastas locales se continúan ofreciendo las convocatorias como Micros, CoLab y el Fondo Cinematográfico que permiten que proyectos escogidos reciban financiamiento con fondos públicos. Los estudiantes de cine tienen hasta el final de febrero para solicitar la Beca Raúl Juliá que puede aportar hasta $15,000 o 50% de la matrícula en estudios de cinematografía.

La Corporación ahora cuenta también con la colaboración de un consejo económico de asesores de la industria privada, que incluye a Vázquez, y que han tenido ya varias reuniones positivas.

“Creo que va ir mejor este año”, opina Vázquez. “Tenemos mejores herramientas. Se le ha dado una buena vuelta a la ley”, al hablar sobre la ley cinematográfica que crea los incentivos para filmar en Puerto Rico.

De las cuatro películas sí confirmadas, “Riding 79” y “Broche de oro” son financiadas en su mayoría por el Fondo Cinematográfico, con alguna inversión privada. “Welcome to the Jungle” es un financiamiento completamente privado, mientras que “Big Move” es una producción de estudio.

The Raul Julia Grant will be presented annually to an aspiring Puerto Rican filmmaker in order to enable him or her to attend a graduate program in film related studies at an accredited institution in the United States, Canada or selected countries in Europe and Latin America.
The Grant will award an amount up to $15,000 dollars towards tuition expenses or 50% of tuition expenses, whichever is less, per year for a period of two years for a Master’s Degree in Direction, Production, Scriptwriting, Film Studies, Cinematography, Editing, Special Effects, Production Design, Wardrobe Design, Animation for Film and Music Scoring.
The Puerto Rico Film Commission will appoint the Selection Committee that may be comprised of members of the local film industry professionals. The Committee will evaluate all submitted work and make a final selection. Nominees will be evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, creative and technical ability, communications skills and filmmaking experience.

Awards will be made by check payable directly to the institution.

The grant has the requirement of one year of professional experience or an equivalent of 1500 certified hours in film industry related work in Puerto Rico following the completion of the graduate degree, providing that if the candidate does not comply with this requirement, he/she will have to pay back to the PRFC all the funds granted under this program.
Applicants must:
1.    Be Puerto Rican born and reside in the island for the past three years. Birth certificate and proof of residency will be required.2.    Have a bachelor’s degree and experience in filmmaking.3.    Apply to a university institution in the following countries: United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

*All applicants must be available for interviews. All submissions have to be sent directly to the PRFC and be written in English. The applicant may apply for the grant before having been formally accepted to a Film Program. However the grant is subject to a formal letter of acceptance to the Film Program of choice. HACEMOS Scholarship Program 2012 – 2013

The Hispanic College Fund (HCF) is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 HACEMOS scholarship program until March 1, 2012 at www.hispanicfund.org/CCI. Scholarships will be based on both need and merit, and awards will range from $500 – $2,000. In addition, scholars will be enrolled into HCF‚s College and Career Institute where they will receive financial, social and career support.

Each scholarship recipient will be enrolled in the College and Career Institute, HCF‚s scholar retention and workforce development program. The College and Career Institute serves as a one stop resource center that provides college students with financial, social and career support that will reinforce on-time graduation, and ultimately lead to a cohort of successful Hispanic professionals. During the course of the academic year, scholarship recipients will participate in professional development webinars and receive periodic advisory phone calls.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

* Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of Hispanic background, or, have graduated from  a high school in the U.S. after attending at least three years

* Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student for the 2012-2013 academic year at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico

* Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average

* Maintain a permanent residence in, or attend school in, a HACEMOS chapter area

* Preference is given to students demonstrating financial need
