The presentation of the Film Certificate films made this semester will be on Wednesday, May 23 at 6 PM in Chardon 121. Certificates will also be awarded to those who have completed all the requirements.

Come! Bring your friends!

The last day to hand in the Take Home Exam and the Research Paper is Monday, May 21. I will not accept any work handed in after that date.

Because of the work stoppage, we were not able to have a final class in which we could discuss ideas for the take home final and agree on the due date. So here are the instructions:

As described in the syllabus, the take home final is a 3 to 5 page essay on a topic related to what we studied this semester. The essay should demonstrate your ability to develop an analysis or argument about the topic you have chosen, and to support your position with an informed discussion of films, directors, movements, ideas about film, etc. studied in class this semester. The paper should have a title which makes the topic of the essay clear. It should begin with an introduction which provides the necessary background for understanding the topic to be addressed. The introduction should conclude with your thesis statement. Your paper should present an analysis of your examples which supports this thesis and end with a conclusion that makes the point of the paper clear. The paper is worth 50 points. Send it to me by e-mail as a Word document. Title the document with your name and the name of the assignment. Example: juanperezcine4002takehomefinal.

The deadline for turning in this paper is Monday, May 21. Papers received after that date will not be accepted.

Choose one of the following questions and indicate which question you are answering. If you write about more than one question, only the answer to the first question will be counted.

1. Some filmmakers use earlier films or approaches to filmmaking as models. Others try their best to make films which are as different from earlier approaches as possible. Choose 1-3 examples of films or filmmakers discussed in class this semester and explain how they use earlier films or approaches to filmmaking as models and/or how they break away from these approaches. What do you find interesting about the relationship between the films/filmmakers chosen and the earlier films or approaches to filmmaking that you discuss?

2. Films are created  by filmmakers and appreciated by audiences in historical and cultural context. They may tell stories or address social, cultural, or political issues that take on a particular significance in a specific time and place. Or they may do more than one of these things at the same time. Changes in technology, economic factors, the kind of distribution that a film does or does not get, the changing criteria audiences and/or critics use to evaluate films, and the different visions and goals of different filmmakers in different circumstances all affect the ways films are made and the way they are appreciated. Films that are popular, or seen as innovative, when they first appear may lose popularity or come to be seen as old-fashioned later on. On the other hand, films and filmmakers who were initially dismissed or rejected by audiences and/or critics sometimes come to be seen as important or significant later on by audiences and/or critics who judge them with different criteria. Choose 1-3 examples of films, filmmakers, or approaches to filmmaking discussed in class this semester and explain the significance they had for audiences when the films were first released or when these filmmakers first proposed their particular approaches to making films. Why were they considered to be important? Did they cater to a specific audience? Why were they popular or not popular?  If they were controversial or caused a sensation when they came out, what was the reason for this? Then discuss the same films, filmmakers, or approaches to filmmaking from your own perspective as a film student in 2012. In what ways do you think they do or do not continue to be important today? How have changes in technology, or taste, or attitudes about social or political issues, changed the way we watch and appreciate these films, filmmakers, or approaches to filmmaking?

3. Films can be made and appreciated primarily as entertainment, or they can be thought of as art. Film industries in places like Hollywood, Bombay, and Hong Kong mass produce big budget formula films designed to entertain that are seen by large numbers of viewers around the world, and measure the success of these films in terms of profits. On the other hand, independent or alternative filmmakers sometimes reject this commercial approach, preferring to make more idiosyncratic films that often have much smaller budgets and are seen by much smaller audiences. When a filmmaker has a voice and a style that is considered to be unique, he is often called an auteur. Idiosyncratic films made by such filmmakers are often called art films, or arthouse cinema. The success of these kinds of films tends to be measured by the prizes they win at prestigious film festivals and the reviews they receive. People who appreciate film as entertainment sometimes consider art films to be incomprehensible or pretentious. People who like art films sometimes consider big budget commercial films to be predictable or vulgar. How do you measure the success of a film? Do you prefer one of these types of films over the other?  Is it important that a film being entertaining? Is it important that a film have artistic value? Can elements of both kinds of filmmaking be successfully combined in a film? Choose 1-3 examples of films discussed in class this semester, explain whether you consider your examples to be big commercial films or small arthouse films, and discuss what, in your opinion, it is that makes them successful or not. As a filmmaker, what are the qualities that you would like your own films to have?
