Please remember to watch one of the films assigned for the class on Arab/Muslim/Israeli Films and write about that film and the films watched in class in Forum 12. Deadline: Wednesday, April 18, 12:00 Midnight.

This week, we will not have class on Monday. Instead, you should read Class Assignment 4/16, which focuses on Indian Cinema, and write about what you read and watched for this assignment. Remember, that, since Monday’s class corresponds to a Tuesday schedule, the work for this class includes watching a full length film. So choose one of the three films included in the assignment, watch it and write your response to the class and the film chosen. Deadline: Wednesday, April 18, 12:00 Midnight.

This week, Thursday was converted into a Tuesday schedule, which means that part of the work for yesterday includes watching a complete film. In class we watched and discussed Arab, Muslim and Israeli films. For the film watching assignment, here are links to three films. Please choose one of them, watch it, and write about it in Forum 12.

1. Hanna K., France/Israel, dir. Costa Gravas, 1983

A Jewish woman emigrates to Israel, and goes to law school. Then, as a new lawyer, she is given the assignment of defending a Palestinian man. As she works on the case, she learns things she did not know about the history and present day situation of the Jews and Palestinians in Israel.

2. Bashu, The Little Stranger. dir. Bahram Beizei, Iran, 1986

Bashu is a boy from the south of Iran who is forced to flee to the north to avoid the violence of the Iran-Iraq war. When he arrives in the north, he encounters a culture that is very different from the one he has grown up with.

3. Blackboards, dir. Samirah Makhmalbaf, Iran, 2000

Kurdish teachers travel to remote areas of northwest Iran to try to bring education to poor, isolated communities.

At the age of 17, the director of Blackboards, Samira Makhmalbaf, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 for her first film The Apple. In the year 2000, she won the same prize again for her second film Blackboards.

The class for Thursday, March 22 was an online assignment, and classes on Tuesday were suspended because there was no water in the university. So I am extending the deadline for Forum 10 until Sunday, April 1 so that you can write about the film clips watched and ideas discussed in class on Thursday, March 29.

No class today due to there being no water in Chardón.
