WPMU-Enterprise allows the site admins to have multi, multi-user blogs on one install of wordpress.

Objective:

Starting with WP 1.5, many of us had to find a solution to upgrade/manage mutiple sinlge wp blogs. This was solved with the release of wpmu. From there, many of us then had to figure out a way to upgrade/manage multiple mu blogs. This is an attempt to solve this problem.

Features:

Multiple MU blogs ex. domain1.com, domain2.com, subdomain.domain1.com, etc.

Different site admins for each mu blog.

Different mu blogs are maintained as companies

Each site admin is given it’s own company to manage blogs, sites and users.

Domain name mapping

Requirements:

WPMU 2.6.1

Pros:

Manage multiple mu-sites with one wordpress install.

Assign site admins to companies and restrict their access to blogs, users.

Cons:

Have to edit 3 core files.

I would love any and all suggestions/comments.

She has shared her process for customizing the front page, which details some very cool hacks. Moreover, today she posted about using WPMu as a space for faculty bio pages and personal blogs/sites.

I just met with some folks from College Relations to talk about how they could use WordPress for faculty bios, which got me totally amped! They want to make faculty responsible for updating their own bios, which was being done with Adobe Contribute, with much resistance from the faculty….We settled on this for a plan: College Relations folks will administer a Faculty blog with one page for each faculty member with a bio….Faculty members can also update their personal pages/blogs and link back to them from their bio’s on the Faculty blog if they’re into that sort of thing. We also discussed ways to get the RSS feed from their personal blog to show up on the bio page….

Very cool stuff, and the plugin for bringing in faculty RSS feeds may very will be aggr. It’s this kind of thing that just further reinforces how useful it is to share what happens in our work regularly. Moreover, it illustrates how key it is for colleges to have a simple, powerful publishing application that will allow this to happen more readily. Looks like Esther is taking care of this for Smith College, so bully for her.

You may have heard of this plugin before, but it’s been completely recoded from scratch to provide a much better interface and an immense ability for configuration as well as full support for WPMU.

It works similarly (and is compatible with) how WordPress.com does it — shortcodes aka BBCode. The user simply clicks a button in their editor and pastes the URL to the video (no need to dig through the embed HTML) into the box that pops up and wa-la — it’s embedded. It’ll even keep their blog XHTML valid.

For more details as well as screenshots, see the plugin’s homepage.

I’ve seen a lot of discussion on how site admins can set defaults for new blogs created in a WordPress Mu environment. Most of the solutions involve figuring out which option you want to change and manually updating the schema.php (ie – hacking the core) or using a plugin file where you manually type in the update_option() command for the option you want to set. I decided to create a plugin that would provide an administrative interface to most of the blog settings, so that site admins wouldn’t have to mess with files. No code knowledge needed.

Anyway, I uploaded the files over at WPMU Dev. Take a crack at them and let me know what you think.
