Given the importance of the service provided and the catastrophic effects of a possible structural failure, the seismic structural design of nuclear power plants (NPP) is more rigorous and conservative than that prescribed in conventional seismic standards and codes. Moreover, the structural design of a new nuclear plant structure is a lengthy and very expensive process that may result extremely challenging for inexperienced engineers. The objective of this fellowship program is to formally train civil engineers in nuclear structural engineering through research work complemented with specifically selected graduate courses. Through this program four outstanding students will be supported to complete PhD degrees; the research topics for the students’ dissertations will be related to the seismic/structural analysis/design of nuclear facilities.
